Monogram Towels As Signifiers Of Freedom And Individuality

Defined Tag: Monogram Towels.
It's been a trend in the past that towels be made ever more personalized. This began with the so-called "His" and "Hers" towels. Of course, it had to be taken further as time went by. Nowadays, it is not uncommon to see monogram towels with "SPF" or some other array of a person's initials on them. Before you know it, towels will evolve to having not only full names on them, but photos of the owners.
This idea of monogram towels must give us pause to consider where we're heading in this world. Yet, historians, historiographers, and the like tell us that before we can know where we're going, we must check the map for trajectory, by seeing where the individual has been.
To cut to the quick from prehistory just after the last ice age, to the beginnings of history, over 5,000 years ago, is to leave an amazing amount out. Yet let's do this for the fun of it. So the basic run-down of it all, whether you follow Darwin or the Bible, is that we evolved socially (at very minimum) by creating clothes to wear (the very beginnings of what would work down to such cloth items as monogram towels) and building permanent structures, once we stopped migrating about the planet, caveman jet-setters that we were.
In time we saw the rise of leaders who went from tribal chief to king. His "lower equals" would protect his interest as the commoners -also known as serfs, held a position little higher than slave. In time the Greeks gave us democracy, and people like the Icelandic and later the British took this idea and ran with it. The birth of the individual had truly begun at long last.
Since then, individuals have truly sung the song of their freedom. From breaking the shackles of the Daimios in Japan, the Imperial Family in China, and in the west, to the Reformation, which tore the heart out of the then-oppressive Catholic Church (leaving a much more lucid, decent Church in its wake), the individual has waxed gloriously.
Today while the individual struggles, it is truly nation states that gain most of the press. Yet every time we vote, write a letter to the editor, or simply express our opinions publicly, we are blowing the horn of individual expression and freedom. As silly as it may sound, this is expressed even with simple objects, such as monogram towels, which remind us of private ownership, of personhood, and even the struggle to stay clean.
